History: It was inhabited by very old populations of the Neolithic Gumelniţa Culture (the second half of the 5th millenium B.C.). The city of Constantiana Daphne was built here during the byzantine emperor Constantine the Great. Some historians argue that a previous settlement, called Daphne, was built here by the Romans.
Tourist attractions: the Museum of Archaeology Olteniţa, Gumelniţa Archaeological Site, the Port, The Shipyard (most of the ships for Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian dictator, were built here), the Water Tower,
St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Albina Island on the river Danube, the meadows of the Danube river (excellent places for fishing, hunting and relaxation – picnics, sunbathing, swimming, sailing)
