Answering the invitation to the cooperation in the Comenius School Project, we would like to present our candidature as a partner in the project.
We are the secondary school from Sosnowiec, in Poland. This is the city situated near the agglomerations like Katowice or Cracow ( about 200 000 inhabitants).
We have had the journalist classes in our school since 2003. The primary object of these classes is to develop students’ interests and abilities , and to learn about the work of a journalist. In correlation with the school work this is the improvement of reading comprehension and the development of responsibility for one’s own statements. Under the teacher’s care the students do the following things:
- They edit the school bulletin
- They learn about the journalism in theory (lectures, seminars, discussions) as well as in practice(editorial practice)
- The students participate in the meetings with the journalists from the local media
- They visit the television studios, radio or a printing office
- The students edit jointly the school’s chronicle and the school’s web page
The best students of the journalist classes have been participating in the international editorial seminar in Bad Marienberg, in Germany since 2005. The main object of the meeting of young journalists from Europe is the improvement of the journalist’s workshop as well as deepening the process of the European integration through breaking the social and cultural barriers.
The teacher taking care of the journalist classes co-operates with one of the college in our region. The students from our school take part in the lectures on the media given at this college.
Moreover, the students interested in the subject of media take part in the outgoing journalists’ workshops. The workshops are organized by our school (they last about 5 days) and by the college in our town (they last 14 days).During the trip the students can improve their journalist workshop mainly at the classes given there. They have also the opportunity to present their practical skills. The final product of such trips are newspapers , films or the internet portals made by the participants individually.
Above we presented the part of activities we take. To the students’ successes we can add :
- Making the radio broadcast about ecology
- Publications in the local press
- The edition of the bulletin in our town
At present the students are realizing the national project. The aim of it is creating the media concern.
Till now the students have learnt about their surroundings and community, the traditions, culture, everyday matters. Now, we would like them to take part in the present world in a conscious and creative way. The international cooperation could give them such possibility.
