Main activities of the institution

We are a Voluntary Organization that since 2001 has been working with inmates in order to offer them possibilities for expressing themselves all together in group with our volunteers. For this purpose, we deal various types of art and expression workshops inside the jail. During these ten years we have realized different workshops: expressive writing, painting, computer, journalism, printing, decoupage, bookbinding. All the products of these workshops (drawings, paintings, poems, dramas, etc) are promoted inside and outside the prison, for increasing the awareness about conditions and potentialities of detained men and women. All activities are carried out in close collaboration with the penal Institution.

Connection between the activities and adult education

Providing informal learning opportunities for detained adults is a real and urgent necessity. The prison population has a common condition of hardship and fewer opportunities, but many different troubles: immigration, drug addiction, mentally illness, life imprisonment, dropping out of school, homophobia. In our experience we have found that arts (and volunteering) are most effective ways to combine the different realities during the educational process.

• Project proposal

Main covered fields	To create an European network for exchanging experiences of educational and/or vocational work with inmates or other disadvantaged people.
Target groups	People (volunteers, trainers, social workers, psychologists...) who work with prisoners and other disadvantaged people, especially using arts, one selves expression and working in group.
Objectives	·         To explore learning processes and methods in other countries. ·         To cooperate in making a common social skills program for disadvantaged people. ·         To compare different experiences and reflect together about some topics: e.g., volunteering, arts, group dynamics, multicultural context... ·         To learn new skills, forms of artistic creation and methods.
Activities	According to the interests of the partners, we are up for organizing a meeting in Italy and to visit other organizations.
Outcomes	Depending on the features and the suggestions of the partners, La Brezza is interested in: ·         making a common performance/art exhibition ·         realizing a publication about the works and shows in European-wide Given that is our first European project, we expect to continue working with the other international partners, making web tools (as newsletter, web-site…) and improving our language skills.
